Police increase patrols and city plans contractor cleanup ahead of encampment closure

City staff said the Charlottesville Police Department and Fire Department have maintained an enhanced presence at the encampment following a recent incident and that on‑site cameras are being used to improve situational awareness. Roman said enhanced patrols include overnight coverage and that public safety teams have initiated a safety plan to protect people at the site and trail users.
On logistics, staff said they have walked the encampment to flag discarded or abandoned items and will contract a separate vendor to remove those items. Councilors were told routine trash collection and bag distribution by Parks & Rec continue; a more extensive specialized cleanup for larger items and hazardous materials is expected to occur in September using an already engaged vendor.
