The State Board of Elections on May 20 continued a motion for reconsideration in a case involving a Lisle Township political action committee after the committee's treasurer challenged the board's interpretation of naming rules. General counsel recommended denying reconsideration under the board's rules but suggested the committee be given 30 days to amend its D1 statement of organization if the motion is denied.
Robert Sacks, the committee treasurer, argued the statute requires the office sought to be “included” on the D1 but not necessarily that it be part of the committee’s public name: “the language of this of the statute ... does not say that the political action committee must include the name of the office that the candidates are seeking in the naming committee,” he said. Board staff acknowledged the practical difficulty for township slates and said rule amendments are being considered; the board voted to continue ruling on the motion for reconsideration to the September meeting to allow time for possible rule changes.
