Jackson County's Board of Supervisors on Oct. 7 approved updates to the secondary roads department safety policy that formalize committee representation and set a four‑year term expectation for two union safety‑committee members, with provisions for renewals and recruitment. The county engineer said the change is intended to open committee participation and provide opportunity for other employees to serve.
The engineer also briefed the board on new mulching equipment attachments and recommended operational safeguards such as pre‑site reviews to check for fence posts, utility pedestals and other hazards. He described equipment limitations and quoted recommended maximum tree diameters from the vendor. "...it was even stated to us from our salesman that it's advised to, like, do a site review before you start to make sure is there any fence posts in there? Is there any utility pedestals?" the engineer said while outlining the procedures.
Supervisors discussed term‑limit mechanics (renewal, appointment process) and operational controls for the mulcher, including closing short road segments during work and notifying residents. Staff will hold a demonstration of the mulching equipment Oct. 16 on Gate Road for board members and intercounty observers; staff emphasized the demonstration is not open to the public for safety reasons.
The board approved the safety policy update by voice vote and staff will circulate the demonstration logistics and any follow‑up safety guidance.
