County signs agreement recognizing Airport Authority as airport sponsor to preserve grant eligibility

The Board approved an Assignment and Assumption Agreement between Meriwether County and the Meriwether County Airport Authority to complete documentation requested by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
County Clerk Allyson Stephens explained the action resolves a historical discrepancy in the Tax Assessor's records versus recorded deeds: the State conveyed 13.2 acres to the County in 1994 and the County conveyed approximately 165.583 acres (including the original tract) to the Airport Authority in 1998, but assessor records were not updated. County Attorney Nathan Lee reviewed the recorded deeds and advised the Airport Authority has owned the property since 1998; the Assignment and Assumption Agreement does not transfer property or expand the airport but formally recognizes the Airport Authority as sponsor and assigns grant obligations so Roosevelt Memorial Airport remains eligible for state and federal funding. Commissioners approved the agreement.
