Residents urge tougher enforcement of short-term rentals at public comment

Chris John told the council, “STRs have brought nothing but problems to Dune City residents,” describing frequent late-night disturbances, trash, trespass and properties advertising higher occupancy than permitted. Neighbors reading a letter about 5175 Russell Drive reported loud gatherings during roadie days, repeated exceedances of advertised occupancy and an allegedly unresponsive property manager, and asked the council to enforce existing ordinances even if it reduces city revenue from STR fees.
Another neighbor said the owners of 5175 Russell repeatedly listed the property for 13–14 guests despite permit changes that reduced the permitted capacity; callers urged the council to prioritize neighborhood livability, parking, septic capacity and safety over transient-profit motives. A member of the public also asked the council to revisit how staff and the mayor handled prior public-comment interactions and to ensure residents can speak without undue criticism.
