Residents and competitors urge upgrades to Mayfest Park rodeo arena

At a Bastrop town hall, several residents and rodeo competitors urged the council to prioritize upgrades at Mayfest Park that would make the Rodeo Arena usable in heat and rain and support more events.
“Young competitors and long-time community members described multi-generational ties to the arena,” said Margaret Ryan Staton, who introduced herself at the meeting as a 12-year-old competitor. “Having this facility would mean the world to me,” she told the council.
Resident Coy Williams said a covered venue could expand uses beyond rodeo to concerts and motocross and make events more reliable for out-of-town visitors. “If you cover it, we can have more than just rodeo there…you can have concerts,” he told the council, noting that predictable scheduling helps attendees plan trips and spend locally.
Deborah Jones, a parks-board member, said many suggestions raised by the public (shade, better concessions, ADA access, RV spots) are already priorities for the parks board and recommended coordinating those items with the master-plan layout to avoid rework.
