Board approves purchase of two AEDs for Recreation Department to meet league requirements

The Board approved the Recreation Department's request to purchase two AEDs and cabinets to meet Central Georgia Youth Sports Association (CGYSA) requirements that an AED be available at all practice locations. County Administrator John Gorton said the quoted total from the vendor Stryker for two AEDs and cabinets was $4,472.92 and recommended using Recreation funds to cover the cost.
Vice Chairman Jennifer Snelson moved to approve the purchase not to exceed $4,472.92; Commissioner Adam Worsley seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Gorton noted the cabinets were likely available more cheaply: "I could get it off of Amazon for $65 or $70," he said. Commissioner Worsley asked why life-saving equipment had to await Board approval when the Recreation Department and director had an approved budget; Gorton explained that Recreation funds are a special service fund requiring Board authorization for expenditures.
The AEDs are the same model already used at county facilities and are compatible with Meriwether County EMS equipment; staff said they will order and place the units at recreation practice locations to meet league safety standards.
