The project's landscape witness described a multi-tiered screening approach designed to reduce visual impacts of the substations's equipment and retaining walls. William Reimer, a licensed landscape architect, said the plan calls for native meadow grasses in restored laydown areas, bioretention plantings adapted to periodic inundation, and approximately 264 trees including large evergreens intended to reach 40—5 feet at maturity.
Reimer said the selection of evergreen species was intended to maintain lower limbs to keep a continuous screen and that additional enhancement plantings could be added adjacent to wetland buffers as recommended by township professionals. The board and applicant discussed the retaining-wall veneer color; the applicant indicated willingness to work with the township planner and professionals to select a darker, more natural-looking stone veneer.
