PSE&G and its consultants told the Montgomery Planning Board the proposed Trent Place substation is a 69-to-13 kV facility intended to improve reliability in the surrounding distribution area and accommodate future load growth from electric vehicles and distributed solar.
Project manager Neil Pieszczalla described the substation's major components: a 69 kV ring bus with multiple line positions and breakers, two 69-to-13 kV transformers, a control house for relay and communications, and a 10-foot anti-climb fence. "Once constructed, the proposed station will help satisfy the growing electric energy requirements based on EV growth," Pieszczalla testified. He said the station would provide power to approximately 6,000 customers, including local medical facilities named in testimony.
Engineering witnesses said incoming high-voltage lines will be routed underground into the station and rise at riser poles to meet the above-grade ring bus. The design includes a mobile-transformer containment pad so a temporary transformer can be placed on-site in the event of an equipment failure. PSE&G representatives said the station will be unmanned most of the time, with scheduled weekly maintenance visits of about 20—45 minutes, and that remote monitoring will alert operations staff to equipment issues.
