Astoria presents annual Dr. Harvey awards, honors library renovation and brick paver restoration

The Astoria City Council opened its May 4 meeting with the annual Dr. Harvey historic preservation awards and proclamations recognizing local preservation work and National Historic Preservation Month.
Mayor Sean Fitzpatrick presented the Dr. Harvey award for best commercial renovation to John Toyoka and Lori Lum for restoring the former Masonic Lodge (Lum Lodge) at 1572 Franklin Avenue. At the lectern one of the recipients quipped about the origin of the project: "Temporary insanity started it," drawing laughter from the audience. The council also honored the Astoria City Library renovation (450 10th Street) and presented an award to Director Suzanne Herold, who thanked staff, contractors and the community bond that supported the project.
The meeting also included a proclamation for National Historic Preservation Month and a separate proclamation recognizing National Police Week. Officials said the awards and proclamations highlight local volunteers, contractors and public investments that preserve Astoria's architectural character.
