Police chief outlines staffing workload, requests independent study

The Dobbs Ferry Police Chief delivered the department’s annual report and a workload-based staffing analysis, urging trustees to consider staffing planning ahead of budget season and to await an independent DCJS assessment.
The chief said the department has 27 sworn officers and roughly 19 civilian employees and that, when sampling February and August, peak demand in August can require as many as 11 officers during the busiest hour. "That averages to about 11,520 calls per year," the chief told trustees while explaining that not all calls consume the same officer time and that emergency calls demand disproportionate resources.
The chief recommended an independent workload-based staffing assessment by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, which is scheduled pending the state's backlog; trustees agreed the report should inform budget planning and asked staff to prepare follow-up questions for the department before the next budget cycle.
