The Landmarks Preservation Commission on March 10 approved a revised plan to install diamond‑plate platforms, ramps and metal cable railings at 2 Varick Street in the Tribeca West Historic District, citing the proposal’s need to provide barrier‑free access to street‑level storefronts. Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the certificate of appropriateness with conditions designed to limit potential harm to historic sidewalk fabric.
Commissioner Kumbe read the motion recommending approval with modifications, saying, “I recommend approval with modifications finding that the proposed ramps are necessary for ADA compliance and that the installation of the platform will allow the 2 ramps to provide barrier free access to all storefronts and entrances.” The commission’s approval also requires the applicant to work with staff to minimize or eliminate attachments to existing granite sidewalk slabs and to review the placement of railings and stanchions in consultation with preservation staff. The commission recorded a 9‑0 vote in favor.
