Residents report unlicensed ATVs and motorbikes; mayor says police not authorized to pursue

At the Oct. 6 meeting a resident raised safety concerns about unlicensed motorbikes and all-terrain vehicles being driven by minors in residential areas. Bob Wagner told the board that unlicensed riders speed up and down Ashland Avenue and Kings Road and provided an address where many of the offenders come from.
Mayor J. William Joyce said the Village is drafting a new ordinance to address the problem and asked Mr. Wagner to forward specific addresses so officials could pursue other remedies. "At this time the Police Department is not authorized to chase these vehicles," Mayor Joyce said, explaining that pursuit could expose the Village to liability if an accident occurs. He encouraged residents to report recurring offenders and said the Village will work on enforcement-oriented options within legal constraints.
The board did not vote on an enforcement change at the meeting; Mayor Joyce described the ordinance effort as the next step.
