Officials closed the session with practical guidance for residents confused by assessment changes. Deborah Blaney said taxpayers often miscompute the effect of a changed assessment by "take the difference and multiply it by 4," which she warned is incorrect for the '3rd and 4th 0.25' calculation; she recommended using the township’s online calculator instead.
Aker and Blaney stressed that homeowners should come prepared with comparable sales and documentation if they want to file an appeal. "So don't multiply it by 4," Blaney said, and encouraged residents to use the web estimator to get an accurate estimate before deciding whether to appeal. They also noted that an appeal challenges the assessed value, not the tax dollars themselves.
