Several department supervisors presented operational updates at the meeting. Communications Director Cheryl McElroy reviewed public outreach, including the August newsletter, social media promotion of the drift event and the centennial weekend on Main Street; she said the town had "over 2,600,000 views" across social channels for event coverage. Cheryl also noted planned platforms (LinkedIn, possible TikTok) and upcoming events including the centennial (Aug. 15) and Community Day (Sept. 10).
Police Chief Upchurch recognized two new officers and Deputy Chief Alexander’s retirement and reported department activity through July: about 3,732 citations issued and 14,065 calls for service to date. He described recent incidents in Cunningham Park, an arrest on July 28 (an individual charged with six felonies and held in Marion County), and added that extra patrols are in place. Chief Upchurch discussed consideration of Flock camera guidelines at the state level to prevent misuse while noting camera utility for vehicle recovery and investigations.
Fire Chief Nohorn said the department handled 350 runs in July and is at 2,310 runs to date; he confirmed upcoming promotions (JP Matthews to assistant chief) and transition activity following Chief Fishburne’s departure. Parks and Recreation reported the outdoor fitness court installation and a schedule for community events through September. Public Works reported wastewater treatment of 120,000,000 gallons in July and water treatment of 74,000,000 gallons for July and announced Brad Sloan’s upcoming retirement.
