Dorchester 02 students win national honors in FBLA, HOSA and FFA
Summary
Board and district staff recognized multiple student achievements: Fort Dorchester’s FBLA produced the district’s first FBLA national champion, HOSA teams placed at internationals (including a $1,000 scholarship), and FFA members won state titles and national recognition.
Dorchester District 2 trustees opened their Aug. 10 meeting with a series of district highlights celebrating student accomplishments from national and state competitions.
Presenter Bohannon told the board that 11 Fort Dorchester High School students attended the FBLA National Leadership Conference in San Antonio and that, "Anna... earned 1st place in public service announcement, becoming the 1st Fort Dorchester High School's 1st ever FBLA national champion." He also noted the chapter earned gold-sealed and gold champion chapter designations. Bohannon credited advisors and parents for supporting the program.
Bohannon moved on to HOSA and said Somerville and Ashley Ridge students achieved international recognition: "Katherine Harden and Dominique Dawson finished top 10 in the world" in medical innovation, and Harden received a $1,000 scholarship from Lilly Pharmaceuticals. Ashley Ridge’s chapter received a national Blood Drive Recruitment Award for running a drive with more than 250 donors and a national service project certificate recognizing at least 500 volunteer hours.
The presentation included FFA accomplishments: Somerville’s Jackson Droz won the South Carolina state auctioneering championship and competed nationally, and Ashley Ridge’s FFA was recognized as a silver national chapter with 100% membership. The board acknowledged the students, advisors and community organizations that support extracurricular programs.
