The Lorain County commissioners authorized the county engineer to prepare and submit applications for OPWC (Ohio Public Works Commission) funding round 41 for five projects with an estimated combined value of roughly $3.4 million, staff said. Projects listed included Baumhart Road resurfacing (est. $721,445; OPWC request $360,722), Smith Road Bridge replacement (est. $230,018; request $170,213), Island Road safety improvements (est. $1,780,073; OPWC request $356,015), Butternut Ridge Road bridge replacement (est. $277,950; request $205,683) and Baumhart Road signal improvement (est. $391,052; OPWC request $78,211).
County staff cautioned that the applications must be approved by the state Public Works Commission and that the county is competing statewide for allocations. Commissioners noted the value of the permissive license plate fee in advancing these projects. "We wouldn't be able to get in line, though, if we didn't have that $5," a staff member said about the permissive plate fee's role.
