Council approves Zamboni purchase through cooperative contract; staff cites warranty and building improvements

Deputy City Manager John Birkner presented resolution 223 to replace aging Zamboni equipment at the city's ice arena, saying the current machines are old, costly to maintain and rusting out.
"The Zambonis that we have are being kinda really held together with duct tape and dental floss," Birkner said, arguing for replacement to maintain ice quality and reduce repair spending. He said the purchase would be made through a national cooperative contract (vendor: JNC ICE) that runs through 2029.
Council members pressed staff for warranty details and storage improvements. Birkner said recent work to replace chillers, improve the roof and screening at the arena should help preserve the new unit, and later confirmed the manufacturer warranty is 24 months for mechanical issues.
Why it matters: The replacement aims to reduce recurring maintenance costs, maintain recreation services and extend usable equipment life. The council introduced the resolution and recorded related votes as part of the consent agenda.
