PENCIL Foundation gives 13,000 school-supply boxes to Nashville students

Dr. Adrienne Battle, superintendent of Metro Nashville Public Schools, announced at Schwab Elementary that the district partnered with the PENCIL Foundation to distribute school-supply boxes to early-grade students. "Thanks to our friends and partners at PENCIL, we have been able to give every kindergarten and 1st grade student across the district ... That's 13,000 boxes filled with crayons, pencils, glue sticks and other key supplies," she said.
Christian Buggs, president and CEO of the PENCIL Foundation, said the group's mission is to support classrooms and teachers and called the organization a "soft landing space" for community contributions. Buggs encouraged families to visit distribution points such as Cockrell Bend and other partner locations to access supplies.
Cheryl Bowman, principal of Schwab Elementary, opened the program and introduced district and city leaders in attendance. The announcement was framed as a way to reduce first-day costs for families and to ensure kindergarten and first-grade students start the year prepared.
