Iona says baseball-field changes will cut runoff and add netting and safety features

Mark Weingarten, the university's attorney, told the planning board that the field sits on a roughly 9-acre parcel at 182 White Plains Road and that the project proposes improvements to meet Division I baseball standards while reducing neighborhood impacts. He said the stormwater design "will decrease the runoff to Crawford Street 70% in the 1 10 and 100 year storm events," and described fencing and netting changes intended to reduce the risk of balls leaving the property.
Weingarten described the netting proposal as an expansion from an earlier 20-foot height to a baseline 40-foot netting, with an additional 5-foot increase in the field-of-play near the shortest distance to homes; he also noted a purchase of a batting cage to reduce stray balls during batting practice. The applicant submitted a game-day traffic-management plan (dated Dec. 23, 2025; revised Feb. 9) that includes event signage and a minimum of two parking attendants on site to manage circulation.
