Tribal official: task force recommends ban on data centers on tribally owned trust lands

Secretary of Natural Resources Christina Justice told the council that a recent data center task force report includes a recommendation to bar data center development on tribal-owned and trust lands.
"Which is a ban on data center development on our tribally owned properties and trust properties," Justice said, adding that the tribe holds roughly 70,000 acres of land owned or managed by the tribe. Justice said proposals outside reservation boundaries would proceed only after "really robust consultation and engagement" to assess community support, environmental impacts and cultural concerns.
Justice said staff will consider proposals on a case-by-case basis and will require deeper engagement with affected communities and regulators before moving forward. The secretary did not announce a timeline for formal rulemaking or ordinance changes; she said the council would be updated as staff completes reviews and develops recommended policy steps.
