Public speaker urges village to use building codes and active street design to advance sustainability

Elizabeth King of 94 Potter Place urged the Village Board to adopt structural measures rather than 'polite suggestions' to meet sustainability and safety goals. She said municipalities are legally allowed and encouraged to exceed state building codes and asked the board to reconsider striking energy-efficiency measures from the local sustainability plan.
"In fact, New York state law specifically and explicitly gives that power in 2 places, an executive law and an energy law. Municipalities are allowed and even encouraged to exceed building code in order to, create more efficient buildings in their municipalities," King said. She also argued the village can implement protected bike lanes and automated enforcement (speed or stoplight cameras) to improve street safety.
King warned that without legal or structural changes the village appears to cede authority and will miss opportunities to reduce emissions and make streets safer. She urged the board to pursue code-based tools to require higher energy efficiency in new builds and to prioritize protected infrastructure for people walking and biking.
