District upgrades fleet with SPLOST 6 purchases, adds navigation tablets and expands propane fueling

Mitchell Satterfield briefed the board on fleet modernization and fueling strategy funded through SPLOST 6. He said the district purchased 111 new school buses, refreshed shop trucks and equipment, and reduced average bus age from about 10 years to below nine. "We've purchased 111 new school buses and we've also made sure that we refreshed our shop trucks, rebuilt engines, invested in all the related equipment," he said, adding navigation tablets will be installed in 100 buses now with a goal to outfit the entire fleet by January 2027.
Satterfield described the district’s propane program: a north-county propane fueling station at the north bus shop (North Forsyth High School) became operational last fall and capacity has doubled (propane buses from 20 to 40; dispensers from two to four). He reported propane averaged about $1.23 per gallon versus roughly $4.14 for diesel; an agreement to access the Fowler Park diesel/gas station should save about $12,500 annually in mileage and time compared with earlier fueling routes. Satterfield said these investments are made with SPLOST funds and are therefore debt free for residents.
