Trustees report surge in property-tax relief payouts, weigh fall fundraising

The Hugh Cargill Trust trustees discussed a sharp uptick in need for property-tax relief after issuing roughly $27,000 in payments, leaving the property-tax relief account with an estimated $29,000 balance, the chair said. "I think what did we just we just gave out $27,000 or just, issued $27,000 in payments, leaving a balance of 29,000," the chair said. Trustees took the report as a prompt to consider near-term fundraising and internal requests for additional support.
Catherine, the trust treasurer, said the amount distributed to recipients has risen markedly: "What we had last year as of July, we had only gotten $28,000 out to recipients for the year. And this year, it is 56." She and other trustees cited higher energy costs and increased demand as factors driving the rise. Trustees agreed to pursue additional funding avenues this fall, ask the trustees of donations about possible support, and to coordinate with the town tax-relief committee to target outreach and future appeals.
Trustees did not adopt a final fundraising plan at the meeting; Catherine committed to make scheduled requests to the trustees of donations in September and to follow up with the tax-relief committee about next steps.
