Historical Commission warns of proposed Section 106 changes that could reduce federal notification

Doug Ellis of the Historical Commission said the commission’s preservation plan is published and that historical markers and other priorities will move forward. He told the Chair's Breakfast he and his commission are watching federal developments closely: "Section 106 is around notification of, to any interested parties of any impact for a federal project that's going on," and he said the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has proposed changes that could weaken those notification requirements.
Ellis urged the town to monitor the Federal Register for any proposed legislation or regulatory changes and flagged potential impacts to projects such as Hanscom, Route 2a, Minuteman National Park, and other federally involved work. The Select Board chair acknowledged the issue and said the board will follow up as the federal process develops.
