Commission approves rear addition and stoop gate at 20 King Street; replaces glass guardrails with metal
Summary
The Commission approved a two‑story rear addition, rooftop bulkhead and a simplified stoop gate at 20 King Street in the Charlton‑King Van Dam Historic District but rejected proposed glass guardrails, ordering simple metal rails instead; commissioners cited owner safety concerns as part of the rationale for the stoop gate.

Evan Wiskup presented LPC‑26‑02927 for 20 King Street, a Greek Revival row house, proposing a two‑story rear addition, rooftop bulkhead, replacement windows, and a stoop gate to respond to reported safety incidents. Wiskup said the owner had experienced a break‑in and street incidents and that a stoop gate was intended to improve security for a young family. Village Preservation and others said they understood the security rationale but urged caution; the Victorian Society opposed new stoop gates generally.
Commissioners weighed precedent and neighborhood context and ultimately approved the application with modifications: the Commission concluded glass rooftop guardrails would be "atypical" and required metal picket rails instead, and it approved a simplified stoop gate to be minimally attached with plain masonry interfaces. Staff will work with the applicant on window materials, masonry probes and the exact gate attachment details.
