Council approves participation in joint evacuation study with Los Gatos

The City Council authorized the city manager to execute an agreement with the town of Los Gatos to participate in a joint evacuation and simulation-based modeling study. City staff said the project will produce shared analysis, evacuation maps, modeling of radiance and evacuation strengths, and prioritized operational and infrastructure recommendations; the study will also identify jurisdiction-specific considerations.
Monte Sereno's financial participation was described as a one-time fixed administrative fee of $4,000 to Los Gatos for project management and contract administration plus quarterly reimbursements equal to 15% of consultant invoices billed to Los Gatos. Staff estimated Monte Sereno's share of consultant costs to be about $56,039.50. The study will be paid from current general-fund allocations originally budgeted for street maintenance and traffic safety, staff said, and is expected to take about 15 months to complete.
Council members praised the joint approach as a cost-sharing strategy for a technical planning product municipal staff said would improve evacuation readiness, emergency coordination and future grant competitiveness. The motion to authorize the city manager to execute the agreement passed on voice/roll-call vote.
Vice mayor Shannon and others said the Pacific Palisades fire tragedy had made wildfire risk center-stage and that the study would help Monte Sereno better prepare for regional wildfire and evacuation hazards.
