Trustees say Walker Beach bathrooms need major work; village will seek state funding

Trustees told residents that the Walker Beach and Wasipa cabin bathroom facilities have serious infrastructure problems that require both immediate fixes and long-term capital work.
At the meeting the board said an inaccessible cesspool at Walker Beach has likely not been pumped for decades and requires pumping now and a future connection to the sewer system. The Wasipa cabin’s line, the board said, has multiple repairs and transitions between clay and plastic pipe; trustees concluded it will be cheaper and more reliable to abandon the old lateral and run a new sewer line to the street.
A trustee estimated near-term repairs and maintenance costs in the coming 12–18 months and said the village plans to use reserves and insurance money for some work, while pursuing state and federal grants for larger projects. Trustees also discussed coordinating with utilities such as National Grid to reduce costs when utility work is planned in the same areas.
No final contract award or construction start date was recorded at the meeting; the board said it would obtain engineering estimates and more precise bids before committing to larger capital spending.
Community members asked about the source of repair money and were told the village’s reserve is above the minimum requirement and there is insurance money earmarked for some repairs.
