Front Street roundabout construction begins; town outlines detour and Aug. 29 reopening goal

Exeter announced that work on the Front Street roundabout at Front, Linden and Pine Streets will begin with crew mobilization on Aug. 3 and a full detour scheduled to start on Aug. 6. The town’s goal is to complete the project and reopen the intersection by Aug. 29, officials said at the Aug. 10 Select Board meeting.
Town staff described the project as primarily resurfacing rather than full roadway reconstruction, which reduces required excavation and supports the shorter timeline. Contracting teams began drainage work and roadway milling and have started installing granite curb. "They began with milling the existing road surface pavement and laying out the intersection," a public works update stated, and staff said traffic is flowing under the temporary detour patterns.
The detour plan routes east–west Front Street users northward onto Lincoln Street, Main Street and Water Street. Drivers who normally travel north–south via Linden or Pine Streets can use Court Street through downtown or a temporary two‑way segment of Gill Street to reconnect with Linden. The town said these closures aim to minimize the cumulative disruption of a prolonged partial-closure project.
The roundabout design stems from a 2022 intersection improvement study and was approved by voters at the 2023 town meeting, the town noted. Residents seeking the most current construction notices were directed to exeternh.gov/projects and Exeter TV’s coverage of the public information session.
