Supervisors convert backup excavator role into full-time Operator 3 position effective Aug. 16
Summary
The board approved changing the existing backup excavator classification to a full-time Operator 3 (excavator operator) to align staffing with equipment; the change is expected to take effect at the start of the next payroll (anticipated Aug. 16).
County staff explained that with three excavators now in the fleet the backup position has been used as much as a full Operator 3 and recommended converting the backup to a full-time Operator 3 in each district to improve consistency and equipment use.
A supervisor moved to approve the change and set the effective date at the start of the next payroll: “So effective, August 16,” staff said during the discussion. The board voted in favor of eliminating the backup designation and maintaining three full-time Operator 3 positions, with the payroll-effective date to be confirmed with human resources.
The change will adjust pay codes when the employee performs operator-3 duties (Operator 3 pay cited at $24.07 per hour for work coded as operator-3 time). Human resources will confirm the payroll timing and notify the affected employee and department.
