Janna Ostroff, the district curriculum associate for science, walked parents through science course sequences and recent changes to New York State Regents exams.
Ostroff said the new Regents require stronger literacy and numeracy and that statewide scores have declined under the updated, more rigorous assessments. She explained how off‑grade accelerated students would take Regents‑level science in 7th and 8th grades and cautioned that while Regents exam results can count toward graduation, New York State does not recognize 7th‑grade classroom coursework as high‑school course credit.
Ostroff noted the state is still clarifying changes to graduation standards and the district will inform families if requirements change for the cohort. She underscored that placement decisions consider the increased rigor of current assessments when matching students to appropriate coursework.
