Presenters say Regents exams will remain but may stop being a graduation gatekeeper
Summary
District presenters told the board that even if the Portrait of a Graduate is adopted, Regents exams would still be offered and appear on transcripts but may no longer be the sole gatekeeper to a diploma; the state plans seals and endorsements to recognize advanced work.

Mr. Sloane told the board the state is proposing that Regents exams could be "sunsetting" as a gatekeeper for graduation for some cohorts. "So students are still gonna be required to pass 22 credits... but if they pass all of those courses and the only thing that they have not passed is the associated Regents exam, they'll still have that ability to graduate," he said.
He emphasized Regents exams will not disappear: they "will continue to be offered... and they'll still be used to determine some of those seals and endorsements" that recognize mastery or advanced designation. The presenters said transcripts will keep Regents scores so colleges and others will still see that standardized measure.
