Johnsburg board tables occupancy-tax awards after vendors and residents press for different priorities

Board members and several local stakeholders spent substantial time debating how to allocate roughly $71,000 in remaining occupancy-tax funds and whether the awards committee’s recommendations matched community needs.
Beth Mark of the North Creek Farmers Market argued the committee did not consult applicants and urged the board to fund the full request for vouchers and event support: “Every vibrant town needs a farmers market. Occupancy tax funding allows our volunteer nonprofit market to exist,” she said, explaining that the market relies on vouchers and volunteer labor and has limited capacity to increase vendor fees.
Multiple speakers — including business owners, Tannery Pond representatives and residents — urged support for existing anchor events (Music by the River, Tannery Pond events, historical weekend) and for investing in marketing and grant-writing rather than piecemeal event advertising. Board members noted a county marketing initiative but said the town can still fund local marketing and possibly hire grant-writing help. Several members said the committee’s rubric may need re-evaluation.
Given the level of concern and requests for more applicant engagement, the board moved to table the awards. The motion to table passed; town officials said no payments will be made now and the committee and board will revisit the allocations and offer applicants an opportunity to present at a future meeting.
