Dover Area SD advances generative AI policy to second reading, posts handbooks for families and teachers

The Dover Area School District Board advanced Policy 815.1, governing the use of generative artificial intelligence in classrooms, from first reading and directed staff to provide supporting handbooks and public information.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Mitchell said the district aims to be transparent and to prepare teachers and families. "It is not always correct. It is not always right," Mitchell said of generative AI, adding that human judgment must remain central. The policy committee, which met July 30, plans to return the policy for a second reading and vote at the next regular meeting; Samantha Holwig, the district's technology integrator, will present a short overview to explain the policy rationale and guidance for teachers.
District staff described three resources posted with the agenda: a Dover AI Handbook for Students and Family, a Dover AI Handbook for Teacher quick reference, and the Dover Area School District Generative AI Handbook. Administrators said the handbooks will be shared on the district website, highlighted at back-to-school events and used in professional development so teachers and families can learn district expectations and classroom practices for AI.
