Resident praises sheriff and commonwealth attorney for refusing to prosecute certain new firearm-law violations

At the June 8 meeting, Smith River resident Kurt Bozenmayer addressed the Board about public statements by Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith and Commonwealth Attorney Dayna Bobbitt concerning changes to firearm laws effective July 1, 2026. Bozenmayer said he "would like to applaud the Sheriff, the Commonwealth Attorney, and the Board of Supervisors for continuing their support of the Second Amendment rights of the citizens of Patrick County," and cited earlier county resolutions declaring the county a "Second Amendment Sanctuary" in 2019 and again in February 2026.
Bozenmayer noted that a number of Commonwealth Attorneys in the Commonwealth had indicated they would not prosecute certain alleged violations of the new law; he said the sheriff and commonwealth attorney’s public statements followed the Board's Feb. 9, 2026 resolution. No Board action followed the public comment; the statements and comments were recorded as citizen input during the public-comment period.
