Public works committee to recommend $80,113 contract to Asphalt Sealers for road surface treatments

Middleton’s Public Works Committee voted Aug. 10 to recommend awarding the 2026 road surface treatments contract to Asphalt Sealers LLC for $80,113.
Ben told the committee the annual program includes crack sealing, chip sealing and surface sealer. He said bids arrived under budget and staff may repurpose remaining funds for other public works projects. The department identified Ryan Wikke as the engineering technician now managing the program. “You’ll see the bids came in under budget, and staff will likely work with finance staff to coordinate if this money could be repurposed for other public works projects,” Ben said.
Member Hollermeier moved the recommendation to award the construction contract to Asphalt Sealers LLC in the amount of $80,113; the motion was seconded and the committee approved the award unanimously. Alder Myers congratulated staff on delivering the program under budget: “I’m never going to cry about a project coming in under budget,” Myers said, noting the lower amount reflects current treatment needs rather than reduced effort.
Staff explained chip sealing’s role in life‑cycle maintenance: it’s a “thin layer of oil…with granite aggregate” applied at the right time to extend pavement life and is a cost‑effective strategy when used appropriately. The committee directed staff to consider using some budget flexibility to fund other repair types if needed in future cycles.
