Presenter outlines mesh units and a neighborhood radio simulation

A Depoe Bay emergency preparedness presenter described efforts to expand neighborhood radio capacity with a plug-in "mesh" unit that can relay signals across multiple homes or businesses if several units are installed.
"So 1 of the things that we were trying in Mobile Cove was this mesh type of communication system, which is a small unit that is plugged in kind of like an, Internet, but the mesh unit will anybody with 1 of those, so if you've got several in the neighborhood, will transmit," the Presenter said, describing how multiple units create extended range. He said the units cost individual buyers roughly "$50.75," which has limited adoption so far.
The Presenter also outlined a planned simulation to test neighborhood-to-incident-command communications, scheduled for Wednesday at 01:30 on channel 15. He said the exercise will use the RMA (rapid needs assessment) form compatible with FEMA/CERT guidance and a filtered channel (channel 17) for incident command staff to provide authoritative information.
"We're doing something different every time we do a simulation... This 1 is a pretty bad, forest fire," the Presenter said, describing the scenario and the plan to connect safety captains with the county emergency operations center. The Presenter emphasized the exercise will test both radio reach and the handoff of assessment data to the county.
