Skaneateles fire chief reports surge in calls, lists upcoming trainings

Skaneateles Volunteer Fire Department Chief Buehler reported a sharp rise in response calls at the board's Feb. 12 meeting, saying the department had "over 60 calls already this year" and listing multiple recent incidents including two house fires, a minor chlorine leak and a construction accident.
Chief Buehler's written report for January included operational counts: 23 total alarms, 1 vegetation fire, 6 EMS calls, 4 motor vehicle accidents, 2 hazardous conditions, 4 service calls and 5 false alarms. He reported an average on‑scene time of 5:24 and 907.6 member hours for the month. The fire chief also noted the department had 12 mutual aid received and 2 mutual aid given.
Upcoming trainings listed in the minutes include SCBA Battle Ball on Feb. 9, Ice Rescue on Feb. 16 and a NYSEG session on Feb. 23. Mayor Sennett noted DPW Supervisor Eric Sell also serves as second in command at the department and has been responding to calls while managing public works duties.
The board did not record any formal action on fire operations at this meeting; trustees instead received the report and the mayor thanked crews for their service.
