Planning Commission recommends clarifying brush-collection rules, suggests 5-inch maximum branch diameter

City Manager Darin DeHaan told the Planning Commission on Sept. 17 that residents are placing large tree-removal debris — including large-scale tree trimming, logs, tree stumps and long branches — on the terrace for pickup, which exceeds the intent of the brush-collection program.
"The brush pick-up program was not intended to remove large-scale tree trimming, logs, tree stumps, and long branches," DeHaan said. He recommended the commission consider specifying that acceptable branches and brush be less than five inches in diameter and to add clear length limits, procedures for storm-related pickups, and improved resident notification about allowable material.
Commissioners agreed with DeHaan’s suggestions and recommended staff take the proposed clarifications to the City Council for consideration. The commission did not adopt formal ordinance language on Sept. 17; the meeting record shows a recommendation to advance the changes for Council review and public consideration.
