Chesterton council adopts ordinance changing sewer payment processing fees

"Currently, we have a flat fee... We are moving to... the average user will be much cheaper if they use their credit card because it's only 3.75," Clerk Treasurer Courtney said during the public hearing. Attorney (speaker 6) introduced the ordinance by title and confirmed required public notices had been mailed and published.
The council opened a public hearing on the ordinance; no members of the public spoke for or against the measure. After closing the hearing, the council voted to approve the ordinance on first reading, moved to suspend rules, and approved it on second and final reading. The attorney announced, "Ordinance is approved. It'll go into effect on the 13th," with the meeting record not specifying the month when the effective date comment was recorded.
The change is intended to reflect the town's move away from its previous credit-card provider and to allow an electronic-check (eCheck) option and other payment methods such as ACH, cash and checks. Council members did not record a roll-call tally in the transcript; votes were taken by voice and recorded as "aye."
