Council members discussed a proposed fireworks ordinance (Ordinance 2024-009) on Aug. 13 after City Manager Darin DeHaan said the Oregon Fire Chief had learned the fire department cannot issue fireworks permits but the city can. Council Member Melanie Cozzi raised concerns about negative effects on wildlife; Council Member Terry Schuster asked whether the city would limit the number of permits, and Council Member Kurt Wilson asked about time limits.
After discussion, Council Member Melanie Cozzi moved to table the ordinance; the motion passed on roll call with no nays. City Manager DeHaan said the city and the fire department would work together on a permit process if the council ultimately moves forward.
