Interim transit director asks county to cover $41,000 in upfront costs, says net expense will be $15,000 after reimbursements
Summary
Keontae DeJarnette asked the commission to approve a $41,000 budget amendment for transit maintenance and operating shortfalls, explaining state reimbursements should reduce the net county cost to about $15,000; he also proposed creating an administrative assistant position on an 80/20 state/county split.

Keontae DeJarnette, interim head of Chilton County's transit department, told commissioners the department has expanded routes and ridership and faces maintenance backlogs after inheriting an underfunded budget. He asked the commission to approve a budget amendment for $41,000 to cover repairs, inspections and other immediate needs.
DeJarnette said the $41,000 would be paid up front by the county and then invoiced to the state for reimbursement: "The gross amount is the 41. The net amount is the 15," he said, describing how state reimbursement will reduce the county's long‑term cost. He also asked the commission to consider creating an administrative assistant job paid on an 80/20 split with the state to handle paperwork and day‑to‑day administration.
Commissioners praised the department's expanded service, cited increased fare revenue (noting fares had risen from a budgeted $15,000 to about $35,045 in the account), and confirmed state and federal inspections and ALDOT compliance deadlines require timely repairs. The commission asked staff to include the amendment on the consent agenda for the next meeting.
