Police chief says speed cameras could reduce roadside risk but raises staffing, overtime and morale concerns

Police Chief Leahy told the Safety Committee that speed cameras present both advantages and disadvantages and that the village should weigh officer safety against other operational impacts.
"Traditional traffic enforcement on I-480 places officers at risk due to the dangers of roadside stops, while speed cameras could provide a safer method of enforcement," Leahy said. He urged additional public outreach and said "further discussion would be needed regarding the use of speed cameras, including staffing, overtime, and the potential impact on officer retention and morale." Council members agreed more information from the vendor and conversations with staff are needed before any legislation is introduced.
