Planning Commission schedules Jan. 21 public hearing on Oregon Fire District variance

The City of Oregon Planning Commission voted Nov. 19 to set a public hearing for Jan. 21, 2025, to consider a special use/variance request from the Oregon Fire Protection District for work at 100 W. Washington Street. Commissioner Rick Ryland made the motion to set the hearing, Roger Cain seconded, and the motion carried with no nays.
During discussion, commissioners noted the application covers five parcels (16-03-178-005, 16-03-178-009, 16-03-178-008, 16-03-178-002 and 16-03-178-001) and recommended removing the two parcels used for the Farmer's Market from the variance request. Commission members also discussed whether any approved variance should include a time limit; a 20-year limit was specifically raised.
Mike Knoup, who spoke during the agenda item, described the proposal and the project's financing. "The addition would double the size of the building and include sleeping space, new offices, and pull-through bays," Knoup said. He told the commission the fire district plans to use existing funds, grants and local lenders to pay for the addition and that the project "will not impact the Farmer's Market area."
