County reports progress on stream corridor assessments; draft 6 Mile Creek report due this fall

County staff updated the committee on two comprehensive stream corridor assessment efforts focused on 6 Mile Creek and Fall Creek. The county applied for two $75,000 state planning grants; consultants (hired after an RFP) completed field work on 6 Mile Creek covering more than four miles and roughly 60 segments and are now ranking candidate sites to develop concept plans for future implementation.
Presenter Darby (with county partners including Soil & Water and consultant teams) said the assessments identify problem areas and opportunities such as bank stabilization, buffer installation, floodplain reconnection and culvert repairs. "We have applied for 2 separate $75,000 grants for what the state calls comprehensive stream corridor assessment studies," the presenter said, noting the draft 6 Mile Creek report will be brought to a future meeting and will include prioritized sites and three concept plans to inform applications for implementation funding.
Committee members asked about ongoing water-quality monitoring (Community Science Institute), historic tests near a shooting range and how the assessment data could strengthen future grant applications; staff said the planning tool will feed future funding opportunities and that coordinated data is proving useful for state grant scoring.
