Planning Commission backs change to grading code, reduces allowable slopes

The Saratoga Springs Planning Commission on April 30 recommended approval of a city-initiated amendment to Chapter 18.05 of the Building Construction Code to tighten allowable grading slopes.
Engineer Ken Knight said the current code allows slopes of four feet horizontal to one foot vertical (4H:1V). The proposed change reduces that allowance to 3H:1V and specifies that, within grading setbacks, slopes adjacent to public rights-of-way would be limited to 5H:1V while all other areas would be limited to 3H:1V. The amendment is intended to align the grading standard with other code sections and adopted standards and specifications.
Vice Chair Doug Willden opened the public hearing; receiving no public comment, he closed it. Commissioner Colton Miles thanked staff for the updated language and moved to forward a recommendation to approve the amendment; Commissioner Chris Roman seconded. The motion passed 6-0.
The amendment will proceed through the city's ordinance/adoption process following the commission's recommendation.
