The School Library Advisory Committee approved a book-acquisition process at its Nov. 18 meeting that establishes how new library books are reviewed and purchased. The process requires a 30-day public posting and community comment period, SLAC review, and final approval by the Lubbock ISD Board. The committee added an amendment to require that the requesting campus (elementary, middle or high school) be identified as part of each request. The motion was made by Alisha Sauer and seconded by Christina Skeen; the committee recorded the vote as unanimous.
Committee members said the 30-day posting and comment window are intended to increase transparency and give the community an explicit opportunity for input prior to SLAC review and Board action. The amendment to identify the requesting campus is intended to help administrators and committee members understand local context and circulation needs when reviewing individual titles.
The approved process will be forwarded to the district board for final action; staff and SLAC members noted the procedure is meant to align public notice and committee review ahead of any purchases.
