Public Works seeks guidance on bicycle donation program; planning staff earns conference sponsorship

JD Hanley of Public Works described a bicycle donation program at the transfer station that had accumulated a stockpile of bikes; after sorting, about 17–18 bicycles were salvageable and were donated to a Kansas Department of Corrections refurbishing program in Lansing. Hanley said the program takes staff time and transport resources and asked the commission for guidance on whether to continue the practice or designate county equipment (a trailer) to hold bikes for transfer. Commissioners discussed regional partners and a soil-conservation drop-off option as alternatives.
Hanley also reported that planning staffer Jennifer Cummings submitted an essay to the National On-site Wastewater Recycling Association and was awarded a full sponsorship to attend the organization's conference in Colorado. Hanley emphasized the sponsorship would cover registration, mileage and hotel at no expense to county taxpayers and said the training would provide new regulatory and technical insights useful to county inspections and public-health protection.
