Bastrop council commits to Safe Streets grant and adopts local safety action plan

Jill Strube, a business and community development manager with the city, told council the two prioritized projects are just under $1.2 million in combined cost. She said the TxDOT portion of the request would be about $944,000 and that the city's 20% share is estimated at roughly $236,000. Council voted to authorize the city manager and finance director to sign grant documents and to commit matching funds. The council also adopted the Bastrop Safety Action Plan and approved staff's proposal to establish a steering committee to oversee plan progress and public engagement. Staff emphasized that inclusion of the two projects and an adopted action plan was necessary to be competitive for grant funding.
Council discussed the long-range goal of zero traffic fatalities referenced by TxDOT (50% reduction by 2030, 100% by 2050); staff described the goal as aspirational and said there are no penalties for missing it but that the targets align the city's plan with state objectives.
The resolutions authorizing grant submission, adopting the safety plan and establishing the steering committee passed by voice vote.
