Bastrop council canvasses May 2 election, swears in mayor and council member

The Bastrop City Council on May 12 canvassed the unofficial results of the May 2 general election and completed the swearing-in of re-elected officials.
Mayor Ishmael Harris announced the unofficial mayoral totals — 479 votes for Harris and 87 for Joseph Stanfield out of 566 total — and reported that Kevin Plunkett received 412 votes for City Council Place 3. Council approved a motion to canvass those results by voice vote. After the canvass the mayor introduced the honorable Chris Dugan to administer oaths of office. Kevin Plunkett and Ishmael Harris each repeated the oath and the associated attestations required by the ceremony.
After the oaths the council recessed for a short reception. Mayor Harris thanked voters and supporters in brief remarks, saying, “Thank you to all of Bastrop… it is an honor to sit up here to serve y’all for the next 3 years.” The meeting resumed later that evening and the council proceeded with its agenda, including proclamations, citizen comments and consideration of multiple resolutions. The council announced and held executive-session discussions on several economic-development and real-property matters later in the meeting.
